Battery storage FAQs

Battery storage FAQs.

Answers about home batteries, solar storage, retrofit battery systems and Feed-in Tariff considerations.

Can solar panels work with a home battery?

Yes. A battery can store surplus solar energy so you can use more of your own generation later in the day. The right setup depends on your roof, usage pattern and existing electrics.

Can I retrofit a battery system to my existing solar panels?

Yes. In many cases a battery can be added to an existing solar PV system using an AC coupled battery setup. This “piggy backs” onto the property’s electrical system rather than altering the original solar installation, helping you store more of your generated energy for later use.

Will adding a battery affect my Feed-in Tariff contract?

No, an AC coupled battery system does not normally affect a Feed-in Tariff setup because it does not alter the existing solar PV system or generation meter. It sits alongside the system and stores spare energy for use in the home. If you are on a specific tariff, we can still advise you to confirm any paperwork requirements with your FIT provider.

How much can I save with solar and battery storage?

Savings vary depending on your generation, electricity usage, tariff and battery size. A battery can store spare solar energy for evenings and peak-rate periods, helping you use more of what your panels generate.

Which Octopus Energy tariff is best for a home battery?

Octopus tariffs change, so the best option depends on whether you have solar panels, an EV and a compatible smart battery. Octopus Flux and Intelligent Octopus Flux are designed around solar and battery storage, with cheaper import periods and export payments for sending spare energy back to the grid. If you also have an EV, Intelligent Octopus Go can be useful because the extra-cheap overnight rate can charge both the car and, where the system allows, the home battery. This is especially helpful in winter when solar generation is lower.

Can battery storage work without new solar panels?

In some homes, yes. Battery storage can sometimes be installed as a standalone or retrofit system, depending on your electrical setup and what you want it to achieve.
