Solar inverter advice

G98 and G99 solar inverter upgrades.

Some homes can benefit from a larger solar inverter, but the local network rules need checking before the system is connected.

What G98 usually means

Many standard domestic solar systems are designed around G98 limits. These are the simpler connection rules for smaller generation systems. For many homes, that is enough.

When G99 may be needed

If you want a more powerful inverter, such as a 5kW or 6kW inverter, the Distribution Network Operator may need to approve a G99 application before the larger inverter can be connected.

Important: approval and timescales are controlled by the DNO. E-Fix can manage the application process, but the local network decides what is allowed.

Why choose a larger inverter?

A larger inverter can help a suitably designed system make better use of available roof space and generation potential. It is not automatically right for every property.

  • Roof size and panel layout need checking.
  • Battery storage plans can affect the best design.
  • Export limits and DNO requirements must be understood.
  • The upgrade should be priced clearly as an optional extra.

What E-Fix checks

E-Fix looks at roof layout, expected generation, consumer unit position, battery plans, existing supply and DNO requirements before advising whether G99 is worth considering.
